Laboratory Safety
The University has the responsibility of ensuring that students are well informed on the physical and chemical hazards of laboratory work. Prior to initiating any laboratory work, students are advised of health hazards and appropriate safety measures by the University's faculty and staff. Students are also encouraged to read and follow safety guidance contained in the Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP).
Training:
Laboratory Assistants are required to attend Laboratory Safety Training provided by Dr. John Kraemer of the Biology Department. Specific Laboratory Safety Training for the individual Lab is provided by the responsible Faculty member.
Skateboarding and Sledding
These activities can result in serious injury. The University discourages these activities on campus property, and takes no responsibility for any accidents resulting in injuries or property damage.
State Department Alerts Students to Risks of Overseas Travel
Each February, the Department of State distributes information to over 1,200 college and university newspapers to alert American students traveling abroad during their spring and summer breaks about conditions that may affect their safety and welfare. Students, who can be caught off-guard by differences in local practices and unfamiliar surroundings, sometimes face the risk of arrest in connection with drug and alcohol abuse and can become the victims of crime while traveling in foreign countries. Students are encouraged to consult the Bureau of Consular Affairs' web site, http://travel.state.gov/studentinfo.html, for the latest travel safety information.
