CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Sept. 3, 2008 -- The Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Southeast Missouri Regional Museum will sponsor a lecture about American Indian astronomy entitled "Skywatchers of Ancient North America" on Tuesday, Sept. 9, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Glenn Convocation Center at the Southeast Missouri State University River Campus.

The lecture will be given by Bill Iseminger, assistant site manager and public relations director at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site in Collinsville, Ill.  Iseminger has written extensively on Cahokia Mounds for both professional and popular publications, including Archaeology Magazine.

Iseminger's lecture examines the wide variety of structures that American Indians built to track the movement of the sun, moon and stars. He will discuss mounds in eastern North America, the "medicine wheel" rock circles of the Northern Plains, and structures in the Southwest and Mexico, to show how these served as calendar devices for the ancient North Americans.
