River Campus Art Gallery Presents 2008 Art Faculty Exhibition

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Oct. 10, 2008 – The Department of Art at Southeast Missouri State University is pleased to present the 2008 Art Faculty Exhibition, a collection of work created by the Department of Art's talented professional artists.

The Gallery will hold a reception, open to the public, from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24. This event will allow the public to view this diverse and accomplished group of work.  The show will remain on display through Nov. 19 at the River Campus Art Gallery located in the Seminary Building at Southeast’s River Campus. Admission is free. Gallery hours will be extended from 1-5 p.m. Oct. 25-26 for Homecoming weekend.

The 2008 Art Faculty Exhibition will include a wide range of media including ceramics, graphite and oil paint, dyes, embroidery and beading, processes of printmaking, sculpture and digital technology, with interesting non-traditional elements incorporated into several pieces.  The collection showcases the skillful use of materials employed by Department of Art faculty in the Earl and Margie Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts at Southeast.

The content and subject matter in this exhibition are as varied as the material choices. The topic of identity is explored through traditional and non-traditional portraitures, epic and evolving personal narratives, the process of transforming a surrounding reality into metaphor and current issues of race and gender.

Other pieces address memory and transition, the manipulation of contemporary belief systems and the examination of repeated symbols. This manner of intellectual investigation coupled with material exploration produces accomplished, thoughtful works of art and encourages both the viewer and the artist to continue to nurture the creative process.

The River Campus Art Gallery is located on the first floor of the historic Seminary Building in Room 106.  Normal Gallery hours are 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.  All Gallery exhibitions, events and talks are free and open to the public.  For more information, contact Gallery Coordinator Emily Booth at ebooth@semo.edu or by calling (573) 651-2663.
