Sand Prairies

Sand prairies are one of Southeast Missouri’s rarest habitats. These remnants of ancient seas and meandering river beds were once widespread in the region, but agriculture and urban development have destroyed the majority of these areas. Today there’s about one square mile of sand prairie left, spread out over several sites. Southeast Public Radio’s Jacob McCleland, along with Bob Gillespie of the Missouri Department of Conservation, checked out two such sites – Sand Prairie Conservation Area near Benton, Missouri and the Charleston Baptist Association Camp.
