The global rise in the cost of rice has been blamed on many factors, including drought in major rice exporting nations, increased input costs, and population increases in rice-consuming countries. As a consequence, many of the world’s poor – who consume rice as a major dietary staple and get by on a dollar per day – are struggling to survive.

Dr. Donn Beighley is a rice breeder and research fellow at Southeast Missouri State University. He spoke to SEPR's Jacob McClelad about Missouri’s role in rice production and what these current rice prices could mean to a globalized economy.
