In the most basic sense, “hypoxia” is a lack of sufficient oxygen to support life.

The well-known ecological dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico is caused by hypoxia, which is the result of excess nutrients…like phosphorus and nitrogen…which flow down the Mississippi River and its tributaries.

On June 16, Missouri joined federal agencies and several other Mississippi River Basin states and endorsed the 2008 Gulf Hypoxia Action Plan in New Orleans.

Mike Wells is the Deputy Director for Water Resources for the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. He represented the Show Me State in the task force. He spoke with SEPR's Jacob McCleland.
