The Missouri Attorney General’s office recently released its 2008 Vehicle Stops Report. The report lays out the racial and ethnic makeup of individuals pulled over by police. The Attorney General uses this information to determine if racial profiling is a continuing practice among Missouri’s law enforcement agencies. The report found that African-Americans continue to be stopped at disproportional rates compared to white and Hispanic drivers.
Missouri law requires that all law enforcement agencies submit detailed reports of each driver who has been pulled over, including each individual’s race.
Jeff Rojek, a professor of criminology at the University of South Carolina and one of the authors of the report, speaks about the numbers on the report.
