The situation in the Southeast Asian country of Myanmar is dire. The massive cyclone that hit the country could have left at least one-hundred-thousand people dead. One million people are displaced. Disease and starvation are a very real possibility.

The ruling military junta is accepting emergency assistance in the form of food and money, yet the reclusive regime has been hesitant to allow foreign relief experts into the country.

Dr. Lisa Brooten is a professor of Media Studies at Southern Illinois University and she has studied the media in Myanmar and the role of opposition media to the ruling generals. She is also on the board of directors of SIU's Global Media Research Center.

She spoke with SEPR's Jacob McCleland.
