Jo Ann Emerson’s chief-of-staff, Lloyd Smith, says that Missouri will choose Senator John McCain on Election Day. Smith, a Republican who has been involved in the McCain campaign in Missouri, adds the caveat “I am fairly confident in that, but no one should be overconfident in an election year."
On September 17, 2008, Real Clear Politics reported that McCain had a 6.5% lead over Obama. That lead is now all but gone.
Real Clear Politics, which averages polling data from several sources to compile a composite score, shows McCain and Senator Barack Obama running neck-and-neck in the Show-Me State as of October 8, 2008.
Smith says that the economic crisis and President George W. Bush are hurting McCain. He feels that in the coming weeks the campaign will focus on the issues and Missourians will decide which candidate is best suited to carry the responsibility of being President and Commander-in-Chief from day one. “At the end of the day,” he says “the good common sense folks of Missouri will choose John McCain.”
Smith believes that conservative rural voters and conservative independents will side with McCain when they cast their ballot. McCain’s pro-life stance and support for the 2nd Amendment will sway many voters. Of equal importance is the future direction of the Supreme Court. “Naming potentially two, and maybe three Supreme Court justices,” Smith says, should sway enough conservative votes to McCain.
