A new bill introduced to the Missouri Senate would seek to curb alcohol consumption on Missouri’s rivers. The bill was sponsored by Lowry City Republican Delbert Scott and would prohibit the possession of beer bongs, Jell-O shots, and containers that could transport large amounts of alcohol. It would also prohibit the distribution of Mardi Gras beads.

The bill is similar to restrictions passed by the federal government on the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. Senator Scott says that the federal action has been successful in reducing excessive alcohol consumption on these waterways. “What has happened, though, the folks that go simply to get drunk on the streams have moved off the federally-controlled streams and moved to the state-controlled streams," he says. "That’s presented a real problem for local law enforcement. That’s why we’re coming at this problem on a state level.”

Violation of the provisions would be considered a Class A misdemeanor.
