You Must Remember This Tuesdays at 7p.m. and Sundays at 6 p.m. One of the newest shows on Southeast Public Radio, You Must Remember This, features popular standards from the past that still are being performed and enjoyed today. The songs come from the world of Tin Pan Alley, movies (musicals and others), Broadway shows - if the songs have achieved stature on their own - and wherever else popular hits have originated. The songs span the years from the early 1900s through the 70s, with an emphasis on songs of the 20s, 30s and 40s, which have been called the Golden Age of American Popular music. Your host for this program is Marlin McCutchan, whose music credentials are stronger in the field of classical music. He has degrees in music education and taught music for more than 40 years, including almost 25 years at Southeast Missouri State University, from which he retired in 2001. His qualifications for hosting a show about popular standards? "Listening to this music for a LOT of years - but not all the way back to the 1920s!" On each broadcast, you will hear music from a variety of time periods and in a variety of styles. Some weeks will feature themes with songs about a special topic. Other shows will feature composers and/or performers who have influenced popular music for a long period of time. In addition to playing a lot of good music, Marlin will tell you a little bit about some of the songs, the songwriters, or perhaps the performers you are hearing. Tune in and prepare to be excited, touched, moved and always entertained by the beautiful melodies and fascinating lyrics of classics from this uniquely American cultural form.
