The Meander Teaser - Double

1) How many children did Johann Sebastian produce, and where in the list was CPE?

ANSWER: Second of five sons from Johann and Maria Barbara. Total children were 20 but 10 died in infance. Of these, CPE, Wilhelm Friederman, Johann Christoph Friedrich, and Johann Christian were to become famed musicians.

2)  Possibly the best known - at least in the U.S.- of Dvorak's compositions is the New World Symphony. In the list of symphonies, what number is that?

ANSWER:  # 9 in e-minor titled "From the New World" (Opus 95) so called because it was written during Dvorak's 1893-1895 visit to the U.S. when he served as Director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York. It resulted from Dvorak's interest in Native American and African-American spirtuals. The well-recognized theme 'Going Home' in that symphony actually came after the symphony.
