Mission & Vision

  • The Southeast Health On Wheels (S.H.O.W.) Mobile initiative is a primary care, dental, wellness and educational program designed to serve counties located in the Missouri Bootheel, a rural, economically deprived area with critical health care needs represented by a range of health disparities.

  • The mobile unit is staffed with a nurse practitioner, a B.S.N. a dentist, and dental hygenist and also includes an interdisciplinary support team of professionals and student interns from the University departments of Nursing; Human Environmental Studies; Health, Human Performance and Recreation; Communication Disorders; Social Work; and Criminal Justice and Sociology.

  • Health concerns are addressed through education, health assessments and primary care to include cholesterol screenings, blood pressure checks, nutrition/dietary assessments, diabetes screenings, well baby screenings, vision and hearing screenings and dental screenings and care.

  • The S.H.O.W. Mobile staff collaborates with local health care providers in selected Bootheel counties (initially Mississippi, Pemiscot, New Madrid, and Dunklin counties) to work together to improve the health conditions of residents.

  • S.H.O.W. Mobile services are available at selected sites convenient to residents with limited mobility due to transportation barriers.

  • The three-year pilot project serves as the foundation of a structure to promote and enhance the health of disadvantaged residents in selected rural communities.

  • A significant component of the S.H.O.W. Mobile initiative is to identify additional fiscal support to continue these services beyond the initial pilot cycle.
