Step Up to Southeast Admission Program

Traditional students who do not meet beginning freshman admission criteria may apply through the provisional admissions program, Step Up to Southeast. Enrollment is limited to nine credit hours (three courses) for the first four weeks of the semester. After the first four weeks, attendance and academic progress is verified. Students who maintain a ‘C’ or higher in the nine credit hours, as well as a satisfactory record of attendance and class participation, may enroll in a three-credit-hour, 11-week course, UI100 First Year Seminar, to gain full-time enrollment status.

Students enrolling at a regional campus through the Step Up to Southeast admissions program may take the ASSET placement exam in lieu of the ACT assessment. The ASSET is offered at each regional campus on a regular basis. Southeast enrollment will continue to be restricted to a Southeast regional campus until the student successfully completes 24 credit hours with a  GPA of 2.0 or higher.

A non-traditional beginning freshman applicant is admissible to the University with a high school diploma or GED. The ASSET placement exam is required prior to enrollment. A non-traditional student, for the purpose of admission to Southeast, meets one or more of the following criteria:

  1. age 21 or older (by the first day of classes),
  2. married,
  3. has a dependent, or
  4. is a veteran of qualified armed forces active duty.
