Southeast Regional Support Center represents a partnership between the Missouri Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse and Southeast Missouri State University.  This agency is a resource center for the Community 2000 Initiative prevention program.  The Center serves community coalitions in Cape Girardeau, Scott, Perry, St. Genevieve, Madison and Bollinger Counties.  The Community 2000 Initiative is a grassroots approach to the crisis of substance abuse and its related problems including violence, teen pregnancies, child abuse and crime in communities.  The Missouri Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse created the Community 2000 Initiative to empower communities to find solutions unique to their needs.  The Center provides to communities many types of prevention materials and activities to enhance grassroots volunteer efforts.

Workshops, presentations and materials about prevention provided to communities include the following topics:

  • Effects of Alcohol and other Drugs
  • Drinking and Driving
  • Parents as Preventions
  • Teen Smoking
  • Community Needs Assessments
  • Funding Sources
  • Tobacco Vendor Compliance Laws
  • Suicide Prevention
  • Prescription Drug Abuse
  • Smoking Cessation
  • Many more including prevention curriculums
  • Other services offered include research, information, education, training, advocacy, networking and technical assistance such as grant writing.

This is a primarily macro and mezzo level practice setting.  The field instructor is an MSW and is off-site.

The Field Experience for the BSW Candidate: Field Education student opportunities include:

  • Dissemination of prevention materials to business, schools, agencies and organizations.
  • Organization and publication of prevention newsletters.
  • Grant research and writing experience.
  • Facilitation of prevention activity groups with local youth.
  • Training high-school youth as facilitators and prevention advocates.
  • Activities associated with developing and hosting community events.
  • Participation in evaluation of outcome-based prevention programs
  • Organization of campus or community smoking cessation classes.
