The CENTER FOR HEALTH AND COUNSELING is an integrated, full-service clinic serving students at Southeast Missouri State University. Health Services provided by full-time nurses and nurse practitioners include education, direct care and referral services.

The counseling services are staffed by licensed professional counselors and a licensed clinical social worker. The counseling services include crisis intervention, psychotherapy services, psycho-educational training and consultation for students. The clinic does not charge for counseling services. Some health education services are free.  Some require deduced fees.  The clinic is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Crisis Team is available evenings and weekends during the fall and spring semesters.

THE FIELD EXPERIENCE FOR THE BSW CANDIDATE: The clinic serves as a field education training site for graduate counseling, undergraduate psychology and social work students. Opportunities for social work students include observing individual counseling, observing and participating in support and education groups, providing substance abuse prevention services (includes SAPE classses), participation in program development for prevention and health needs on campus (Student Health Fair, Alcohol Abuse Screenings, Eating Disorders Awareness Week), providing casemanagement for a variety of counseling clients, working with the Peer Educators Association in providing presentations on health related topics on campus, attending several types of interdisciplinary meetings, both at the center and in the campus community, interfacing with other professionals in the community at large, and attending conferences and workshops related to the mental health field.

WHAT STUDENTS SAY:
“This field education placement is geared toward those who are interested in experiencing the social work profession at all levels, micro, mezzo and macro. The supervision is good (not too close or too distant) and will carry on throughout the semester. Basically you have the ability to work on projects and be involved in the certain areas, committees, etc., that you are interested in. The field education site is best for those who need a site in which they can be creative. There is some structure and organization but overall it is a causal atmosphere where you will ,for the most part, have to make up your own “to do” list – good for those who need to work on time management skills.”

“The pace is pretty steady after you have figured out (through your learning plan) what all  you intend to do throughout the semester. Some things you may be doing at the micro level include: observing one-on-one counseling sessions, interviewing various committee chairs and department reps either on or off campus and conducting assessments with SAPE students (those who got busted for alcohol and/or marijuana violation). One main thing you’ll probably do at the mezzo level is co-teach the SAPE classes. You will be doing this with the graduate assistant at the agency. At the macro level you get a chance to sit in on many committee meetings on and off campus as well as attend conferences and workshops.”

"My overall experience at Center for Health and Counseling was very good.  It is a very "student driven" placement which means you often have to direct what you do.  That gives you a lot more leniency to do what fits you best. The staff are great to work with and always available to help you out or answer any questions you may have.  They are very willing to provide opportunities  for you to work at all levels of practice - micro, mezzo and macro. They also provide plenty of opportunities for you to complete tasks and work on projects outside of working with your supervisor.  You can get experience in interviewing, observing therapy sessions, and leading support groups. You can work with the Peer Education Association  and work in the student community on larger events such as the Health Fair .  You can also complete alcohol abuse and eating disorder screenings.  It is an ideal placement for students who are thinking about a career in psychotherapy/counseling and who want to work with young adults.  I got to learn about a range of issues from learning disabilities, physical disabilities, severe mental health problems, to the more common school, relationship and family issues.  I was very grateful to have this opportunity and wish the next students much luck!"

" This experience has taught me that you can never assume anything about anyone.  I thought I knew this but there is a big difference between saying that I do not have biases and truly being nonjudgemental.  Further, I believe that this will not be the last time that I learn something about myself. With each person I encountered in this placement who was different from me, I learned something new about myself."
