The JOHN J. PERSHING V.A. MEDICAL CENTER, located in Poplar Bluff, Mo., provides primary care to veterans throughout 29 counties of Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas.  Approximately 50,000 veterans live in the service area and about 40 percent of them receive care at the medical center annually. The facility is comprised of 16 general medicine beds and 40 extended care beds. Special programs include mental health clinic, home heath care, hospice care and substance abuse program.

THE FIELD EXPERIENCE FOR THE BSW CANDIDATE:  The VA Medical Center offers the following field experience activities for BSW candidate

  • Discharge planning for acute care patients
  • Completing assessment  on palliative care patients
  • Conducting interviews for homemaker/home aide patients
  • Conducting home visits with social work and nursing staff
  • Completing advance directives with patients
  • Participating in interdisciplinary team meetings
  • Participating in social work monthly meetings
  • Referring patients to appropriate resources
  • Performing case management duties

Level of practice opportunities are micro, mezzo and macro with emphasis on micro. Field Instructors are all MSW’s with many years experience in medical social work.
