Considering a career in education? If so, you might consider following in the footsteps of Amy Daller. Amy, a sophomore, from Hermann, Mo., has always loved working with children. Amy began babysitting when she was in the sixth grade and continues to baby-sit to this day for a summer job. Amy’s obvious love for children has turned into her future career as she majors in early childhood education at Southeast Missouri State University.
Most kids can’t wait for the final bell to bring the school day to an end. Amy said she knew she was different when she would imitate the classroom setting at home.
“I always made my younger brother play school with me when we were little. I would, of course, be the teacher and he would be my student,” Amy explained. Amy now uses her passion for education in multiple facets on the campus of Southeast.
Amy’s involvement on campus includes Student Government, Student Activities Council publicity chair, Residence Hall Association and she is a senior orientation leader. She also participated in the Education FLighT program.
As an incoming freshman from a small town, Amy knew only two people who were enrolled at Southeast.
“I got involved right away and found myself meeting a lot of great people,” Amy said.
Amy says her favorite activity is being a senior orientation leader for the office of New Student Programs.
“I help run different sessions and most importantly help incoming freshman make their schedules for the upcoming semester. I love helping out the new students because I see a lot of them on campus and they recognize me from making their schedule or from giving their family a tour,” she said.
When it comes to her future classmates, Amy believes if you are considering majoring in education, you should definitely be involved in the Education FLighT program on the campus of Southeast. The Education FLighT program informs future teachers how to find solutions to the problems affecting our schools today.
“I was involved in the Education FLighT program here at Southeast and I’d have to say that’s one of my best decisions that I’ve made relating to my major,” Amy explained. Amy said she got to take two classes with other students who were majoring in education.
“I haven’t had an education class since FLighT that didn’t have at least one of my FLighT members in it. I automatically know someone when I walk into the first day of class and I always have someone I can study with,” she said.
Personally, Amy loves being creative in her free-time. She says her hobbies include crafts, crocheting and scrapbooking. She also says she enjoys traveling.
“I’d have to say my two favorite trips have been to Cancun, Mexico and Walt Disney World,” Amy shared.
Amy’s brother recently decided to attend Southeast in the fall after seeing the success Amy has had during her college career. She says she gives him the same advice she would give any other future student.
“Get involved in something right away when you come to school in August. If you have something tying you to Southeast such as Greek life, Student Government or the Residence Hall Association, then you won’t feel the need to go home all the time.”
