Sarah Politowicz, a senior elementary education major, is an extremely involved student. Since coming to Southeast four years ago, Sarah has been a part of 15 student organizations and has held numerous executive positions, including former president of Student Activities Council (S.A.C.) and student facilitator of Emerging Leaders.
Her favorite memory of her time at Southeast is when she was recognized at the S.A.C. end-of-the-year banquet.
“I was told that the organization would not have been the same without me and my leadership. It was a true honor because I have been involved with S.A.C. since my second day at Southeast,” Sarah explained.
This fall, Sarah will be student teaching in Sikeston, Mo.
“I love the education program at Southeast. While it was extremely challenging at some points, I really learned a lot of things for how I want to teach and what I do not want to do,” Sarah said.
After graduating in December, Sarah plans to return home to the Chicago area and get a job teaching kindergarten through third grade.
This summer, Sarah has gained lots of experience working with children. She is a camp counselor for the Redhawks Kids Camp, which is sponsored by Recreational Services at Southeast.
“We do different games, we go to the pool and we even have a community service project. It’s all about having fun,” Sarah says about the camp.
When she’s not busy with school or one of her many student organizations, Sarah enjoys taking photographs and scrapbooking. She also collects various items, including Care Bear memorabilia and postcards from across the country. In addition, she enjoys traveling. Some of her favorite destinations include Hawaii, London and Paris, and she would love to see more of Europe and the United States.
Sarah’s advice to future Southeast students comes as no surprise.
“Get involved. Everyone says it, but they mean it. It is the best thing you can do for yourself. I guarantee you will find yourself and your limits, and they will not be what you thought they were. You will meet so many amazing people and do things you never thought you would. I know I did.”
“My time at Southeast has taught me so much about myself and what I am capable of. Whether it is leadership or friendship, the ups and downs and the experiences inside and outside the classroom, have made me who I am.”
