For one international student from Beijing, China, choosing to attend Southeast was a decision that she is proud of. As a public relations major, Chen Chen understands the importance of getting involved on campus.

During Chen’s tenure at Southeast, she has been involved in several clubs and organizations such as Chinese Students and Scholars Association, COMMrades, International Student Association, Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) and Society of Professional Journalists. In addition, she has served as a resident assistant, orientation leader, presidential ambassador and student ambassador.

Chen represented the Southeast chapter at the PRSSA National Conference in Detroit, Mich. During her four-day stay in Mich., she met with representatives of big names in the public relations industry such as Ofield Dukes, General Motors, Fleishman-Hillard and Ketchum. Chen is now a delegate of the Southeast chapter of PRSSA and will attend the PRSSA National Assembly in New Orleans in March. Chen says, “Because of events such as these, I have more confidence in my public speaking skills and my ability to succeed in a public relations career.”

Chen is participating in a program that Southeast established with Sichuan Normal University in Chengdu, China known as “1+2+1.” Chen, as part of the program, has already completed her freshmen year at Sichuan and after 2 years at Southeast, Chen plans on returning to Sichuan Normal University to complete the program and receive degrees from both universities. Chen plans on returning to the United States for her master’s degree in public relations.

In Chen’s spare time, she enjoys cooking as well as learning new languages. She has learned the basics of Korean and Spanish and is now studying Japanese to master her foreign language skills.

Chen gave this advice to Southeast students: “Never give up on your dreams, no matter how hard. Always look on the bright side of things because life is full of adventures.”
