Those in the health care industry must be compassionate and love what they do. Lindsey Hueter, a senior at Southeast, learned this through her clinical work. “Every patient I helped care for taught me a valuable lesson in humility and will continue to do so throughout my career.” Hueter entered the nursing program knowing she loved medicine, but later found all the aspects of nursing to be incredible. “My education and clinical experiences here have certainly helped shape who I am today.”

Hueter enhanced her education with an externship at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in Saint Louis. There she worked with other nurses observing and practicing patient care in several areas of cardio medicine. She credits the externship with “inspiring me to go on to grad school to get an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner degree; I plan to specialize in cardiology and would like to eventually work as part of a heart failure/heart transplant team at a place like Barnes-Jewish Hospital.”

Here at in Cape Girardeau, Hueter can be found riding her bike, exercising at the recreation center or attending musicals at the River Campus. A lover of the performing arts, she enjoys singing and dancing. She is also an avid reader, when she has the time. She believes all students should be self directed learners. “It has been virtually impossible for me to learn everything I need to know for nursing just inside the classroom. This will not only help during college, but throughout life.”

In March of 2008, Hueter went to London and Paris with the Center for Strategic and International Studies. In the future, she hopes to do medical missionary work around the globe. In her immediate future, she will attend Vanderbilt University to earn a master of science in nursing. She plans to become an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP).
