Doug Kluesner, a senior at Southeast Missouri State University, is interning at SSM St. Joseph Health Center in St. Charles, Mo.
Doug’s major is in mass communication with an emphasis in public relations and a management minor.
He is working in the public relations (PR)/marketing department of the St. Joseph Health Center.
“I hope to gain the most knowledge I can from an internal public relations standpoint. All the PR is done from this office for the whole hospital, so I hope I get a lot of experience,” he says.
Doug says he has been assigned to many different tasks during his internship.
“I have interviewed several people, mostly for a bulletin board collage, and some others I interviewed for feature articles. I have also attended meetings with all the public relations/marketing directors from each hospital and discussed their projects and future plans,” explained Doug.
“My supervisor, Mary Enger, has had me work on a campaign that promotes the hospital using the employees as individual PR practitioners,” he says. “I have also interviewed several employees using Flip video and put together a video on what employees are doing
for their vacations. I have also written several news releases that I have gotten published in the employee newsletter.”
During his time at Southeast, Doug has learned useful skills through his end-of- semester projects and took that knowledge to his internship.
“The best thing about my internship is using everything that I have learned in school and incorporating it into a real world setting,” he says.
Doug says that Southeast has benefited him in multiple ways.
“It [Southeast] has given me time to grow up and be more mature than I have been. I have become more responsible and have changed a lot of the bad habits I used to have, such as procrastination. I also have improved the quality of work that I produce,” he stated.
He said he also enjoys Cape Girardeau because of the exciting nightlife and just hanging out with his friends.
Doug said he hopes to get an out-of-state job on the East Coast and travel to historic places in the future.
