Southeast senior Hannah Ragsdale, of Imperial, Mo., recently completed an internship at the Charles L. Hutson Horticulture Greenhouse on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University. Hannah, who will graduate with a bachelor of science degree in agribusiness with an emphasis in animal science, says she got the internship after taking a horticulture class. The professor for the course helped her in arranging the internship.

“At the greenhouse, I helped with transplanting the chrysanthemums for this fall, learned all about the different types of species of plants and what seasons they grow,” Hannah said.  “I learned how to mix soils and fertilizers for the proper plants, worked with the customers, took care of the plants on campus, and watered daily.”

Hannah served as the assistant manager and managed the greenhouse while the upper management was away.

“The experience at the greenhouse taught me it takes a lot of time and consideration to operate and upkeep the greenhouse and plants,” Hannah said. “Working there has broadened my experience in the agricultural field, and I enjoyed it very much. I loved working with the customers and taking care of the accounts on campus the most while working at the greenhouse.”

Hannah says that her time at Southeast has contributed to her success both in and out of the classroom.

“In the Agriculture Department here on campus, everything is hands-on and friendly which makes it easy to want to go to classes and learn,” Hannah said.  “The professors are easy to reach, which makes all the difference in and out of the classroom. I am a member of Alpha Xi Delta, and being a part of something so strong and close is something that also made my time at Southeast amazing for me.”

When Hannah isn’t busy with classes, or spending as much time as possible with her sorority sisters before she graduates, she can be found participating in many activities.

“I play soccer at every opportunity, and I also love to swim,” Hannah said. “I used to swim competitively through high school, and still try to keep swimming here. But it is hard with classes, Alpha Xi Delta, and taking care of my pets too. I also love taking my dogs for walks and spending time with them when I can. My best friend and I love to go downtown and look and shop through the little antique shops.  I also like to travel to Rhode Island to visit my fiancée’s family there.  It is beautiful and is an ‘out of the ordinary’ vacation spot to experience.”

Hannah offers the following advice to Southeast students: “Get involved as much as possible, and keep track of everything you have done through college to make for an easy graduation.”
