Every student on the Southeast Missouri State University campus has enjoyed the fruits of Joanna Shaver’s labor, but few realize it.
Joanna, coordinator for campus programming at Southeast, helps plan entertainment and educational activities for students while advising Student Activities Council, Up ‘til Dawn and Gamma Sigma Sigma.
She completed her undergraduate degree at Southeast in 2000, majoring in sociology. During that time, she was a resident advisor in which she discovered her passion for the University and being involved with its students and events.
“Engaging students outside the classroom is just as important as engaging them in the classroom. While academics are important, it’s also vital that students learn to function in a diverse environment, work with other people, have fun and discover their passion,” Joanna said.
Joanna began working for the University right after graduating from Southeast nine years ago, and she later received her master’s degree in public administration from Southeast in 2006. Throughout her time on campus, she has successfully put her beliefs into action through special events she plans for students.
“My favorite thing is to see happy students at an event I’ve worked hard to produce,” Joanna said.
She wants students to be proactive in the event planning at Southeast by sharing their requests with the Student Activities Council, and she encourages students to take advantage of being in college and take part in all the activities the University offers.
“Enjoy the college experience,” Joanna said. “There are so many new things to learn and do at Southeast, and I hope students can find that.”
As a new mother, Joanna enjoys spending time with her daughter. She says she also likes to travel, bake and study people.
“I’m always wondering why people do what they do or how they come up with ideas to better our society,” Joanna said. “People are so complex and intriguing.”
