Jamie Litteken of Breese, Ill., has really soaked up Southeast in her first two years. “Southeast has given me so many opportunities in two years. I have traveled the world, met amazing friends and gotten involved in many city organizations.”
Jamie spent two weeks in Cuernavaca, Mexico, with the Department of Foreign Language and made side trips to Xochicalco, Tepotzlan, Texcoco and Teotihuacan. She stayed with a Mexican family and ate the most delicious meals she has ever tasted. “It was an amazing experience. I learned so much about the Mexican culture, the people and the language. I realized that knowing another language is such a valuable asset, and it is what motivates me when i get frustrated with my difficulties in Spanish.”
Jamie and other Southeast students embarked on a pilgrimage to Italy with Catholic Campus Ministry. She says, “I am in love with Assisi, Italy; a quaint little town overlooking the Italian countryside. When you are there it is as if you are a true Italian and not a tourist.” The group also visited the Vatican, Pantheon, Roman Coliseum, the Spanish steps, and many more sites across Italy. Another expedition landed them at a pro-life march in Washington, D.C. For Jamie, being in the center of our governmental system was a dream come true.
With a double major in Spanish and social work, Jamie stays busy. She volunteers at Birthright and Safe House, in addition to visiting residents of the Veteran’s Home. She serves as co-chair on the Newman Council, helping to organize and plan service events. Her favorite event was a Birthright baby shower. They collected items for the center while playing games and eating cake.
Jamie credits Southeast for opening doors for her. She says, “I don’t think I would experience this many opportunities in a larger school, and it has helped me become a more diverse and educated person.” Another chance to learn is arising for her already; she will be studying Spanish and living with a host family in Queretaro, Mexico for six weeks in the summer. She encourages others to “experience everything and have fun. The time goes by too quickly!”
