For Michele Irby, director of Campus Life and Event Services, the best part of every day is interacting with students,
“My favorite moments all involve working with college students,” she says.
Irby, of Jackson, Mo., has been a staff member at Southeast since 1998.
“I chose Southeast because I had a great experience here as an undergraduate student,” she said.
Her time at Southeast working on a bachelor’s degree in mass communications helped her realize her desire to work and interact with people.
“By the time I reached graduation, I knew that I very much enjoyed my out of the classroom experiences,” she explains. “I knew I wanted to obtain a master’s degree so I could assist students to have similarly rewarding experiences during college.”
After receiving her master’s in college student personnel administration from the University of Central Missouri, she made her way back to Southeast.
“I learned a great deal here as a student, and thought I would enjoy the opportunity to work with the students on this campus,” she says.
In her position at Southeast, Irby oversees the University Center, Greek Life, numerous student organizations, leadership development programs and the Southeast Speakers Series. She serves as the advisor to Student Government, coordinates Family Weekend, works with the student portions of Homecoming and much more.
“Every day, I work with young men and women to develop skills and competencies that will allow them to succeed in life,” she says. “It is very rewarding.”
Irby is always looking for new ways to deliver services and experiences to students. Due to her extraordinary commitment and dedication to students, she was honored this year in the Professional Staff category with an Employee Recognition Award.
Irby “always is willing to assist with programs,” her nomination said. “No matter which professional staff member is in charge, she is there to assist or guide them.”
When asked, Irby describes her work style as highly collaborative.
“I involve as many people as possible in my daily work,” she says. “I really believe that in teams or work groups creativity abounds.”
The trick she says is to find something you love and then find someone who will pay you to do it. This philosophy has served her well.
“After 20 years in the field, I still enjoy coming to work every day,” she says. “I am so fortunate to have found a job that allows me to do what I enjoy most.”
Irby keeps up her fast paced life outside of work as well.
“I have two very energetic boys who are involved in many activities,” she says. “I really enjoy getting to be their biggest fan.”
