Southeast Missouri State University student Whitney Plunkett recently completed a marketing and special events internship at the 2011 Missouri State Fair.
She coordinated special events, including the Opening Day Ceremony, the Amateur Talent Show, the Governor’s Ham Breakfast and a media tour. She worked with government agencies and the public as part of her duties.
“This internship gave me a lot of real-world experience and helped me realize that I would love to go into special events planning,” the Williamsville, Mo., native said.
Whitney has a double-major in organizational leadership and integrated marketing communications. After graduating, she plans to pursue a position as an assistant at a local special events planning firm to gain more experience in the field before returning to Southeast to pursue an MBA. She said she values her time at Southeast.
“The professors actually care. They have helped me through school and deciding on future plans,” she said. “I am comfortable interacting with both my peers and businesspeople as a result of many communication classes and projects I have completed while in my management and marketing classes. Overall, I feel that my time at Southeast has helped shape the person I am, prepare me for life after college, and lead me to friends and mentors that will last a lifetime.”
In her spare time, Whitney enjoys sports. She plays volleyball, softball and golf, and she and her friends, family and boyfriend watch baseball, basketball and football. Whitney also travels and especially enjoys visiting Florida. She relaxes on the beaches there every summer with friends. In the future, she plans to explore Italy and the rest of Europe.
She advises future Southeast students, “Interact with your teachers, especially those of your major. They are a great source of knowledge and networking for future potential leads after college.”
