When I came to Southeast, I didn't have a major or any idea what I wanted to do with my life. I was always really involved and focused in high school, so it was hard for me to feel so lost. In the spring of my freshman year, I applied for a job in the admissions office to make a little money and meet new people.
I didn't realize that the job would be such a great experience for me. At first, giving campus tours, I was able to help prospective students with their college decision. I had such a hard time with my choice; I was excited to help other students with their choice. Since there are over 50 student ambassadors, I also got to meet a lot of current students.
After working as a student ambassador for awhile, I took on more responsibility in the office. I learned new skills and interacted with office staff on a day-to-day business. It was great because I was exposed to a real work environment, but I never had to leave campus.
The best part about the job was the people I met. The students that are involved in our office recruitment teams are all unique and diverse people who challenge each other and help each other in and outside of work. I met my best friend through the student ambassador program. We started out giving tours together, and now we do everything together.
I also found a mentor in my supervisor. She genuinely cares about all of the student workers and takes interest in our lives. She takes the time to get to know us as people, not just employees. Working on campus is not like working anywhere else. Everyone realizes you are a student first and an employee second. They want what's best for you and go out of their way to help you achieve your goals.
I have never had a job that I loved. It was always just something to pay the bills or buy the new CD I had to have. In the last three years, I have loved every minute of my job. It has helped me to grow as an individual, as a scholar, as a employee, and as a team member.
