Southeast Missouri State University

Internship Gives Jennifer Martinez Video Production Experience

College of Liberal Arts – Mass Communication

Southeast student Jennifer Martinez of Hillsboro, Mo., is interning at the Veterans Affairs Knowledge Network Studio, a state-of-the-art digital satellite system in St. Louis.

The studio delivers learning and performance improvement opportunities to viewers.  Programming is offered on four channels, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  At the studio, Jennifer has several responsibilities, including assistant to grip, gaff and production in the studio as well as Avid and Aftereffects editing.

“This internship has given me a lot of experience in the broadcast and editing field that I can definitely see myself using in the future,” Jennifer says.

Southeast has prepared Jennifer for her internship and for her future career.  She says she had caring professors who have become mentors for her and helped her prepare for her future.

Jennifer is a mass communication major with an emphasis in television and film. She expects to graduate in May 2013.

“I love being a part of the production of television and film,” Jennifer says.  “A live television broadcast is incredibly fast-paced and exciting while a film shoot is more slow-paced and lets you indulge in the beautiful details.  Both are incredibly rewarding for me.”

While studying for her degree, Jennifer is involved in many campus activities and organizations. She works in the Grauel Building as an assistant in the Avid editing lab, works with the media equipment checkout in the Department of Mass Media, is president of Toms on Campus and is treasurer of The Society of Photographic Artists.

“I recommend becoming involved in on-campus organizations to everyone,” Jennifer says.  “I’ve met several friends with common interests this way and feel a lot of pride in the organizations I’m involved in.”

Jennifer’s favorite memories at Southeast include the 2011 Fault-Line Film Festival.  She met some of her closest friends while preparing for the festival and produced an award-winning film.

“It was an experience I’ll never forget and I look forward to another one this coming fall,” she says.   Jennifer’s advice for future Southeast students is to join campus organizations, check out local shops and don’t be afraid to try to get ahead in the pursuit of a major.

When she’s not studying or working, Jennifer enjoys volunteering at animal shelters, writing, taking photos, playing music, shooting short films, shopping at Annie Laurie’s and eating at Burritoville.  Her favorite place to travel is Portland, Ore., and she says she would love to visit Europe for a second time.

After graduation, Jennifer plans to move to California with a friend she met at Southeast and try to get into the television and film business.
