Farmington Native Jessica Herwig Interns with Southeast Mental Health Center
Department of Management and Marketing
Southeast Missouri State University human resource management major Jessica Herwig recently completed an internship with the Southeast Missouri Mental Health Center in her hometown of Farmington, Mo.
“I feel this internship experience will contribute to my future success in areas such as networking with local human resource professionals and gaining new knowledge and experience while working within my field of study,” she says.
During her internship, Herwig completed time audits for employees and budget analyses for pay raises, wrote letters to employees, observed hiring panels, and updated hospital forms and policy manuals. Her daily responsibilities included maintaining the center’s filing system, assisting employees and completing various projects.
“I am excited to work in this field,” she says, “because the work has value and is important. I get the opportunity to work with people from all parts of an organization, and each day will bring different and new challenges.”
Last year Herwig gained professional experience while working for the Southeast Missouri University Foundation’s Telefund, during which she telephoned alumni to update their information and seek Annual Fund donations.
There “I learned a lot in both oral and written communication skills and also how to interact with people, whether they are a customer, an employee or a boss. I also was able to learn to work towards goals and under time constraints,” she says. “I had a positive experience with the Telefund; it helped to improve both my oral and written communication skills and helped me learn to be a member of a team.”
Herwig is a transfer student; she started her studies at a community college in southeast Missouri.
“I am glad I chose Southeast, because there are many opportunities here,” she says. “You just have to be willing to take them.”
Herwig credits her time at the University with helping her succeed.
“My success in and out of the classroom is due to the high standards of education that Southeast provides. I was well prepared as an intern due to the business classes I have had and the instruction I received from the Donald L. Harrison College of Business faculty,” she says. “I also feel that I couldn’t have done as well in the classroom if Southeast hadn’t provided so many avenues for growth. I have attended speaker series, study groups and other events that have rounded me out as a student as well as a person.”
While not working toward her career, Herwig says she enjoys attending Southeast athletic events.
“I love going out and supporting our Southeast Redhawks! My favorite sports to attend are basketball and football,” she says.
Also in her spare time, Herwig shops at West Park Mall and eats at her favorite Cajun restaurant, Broussard’s Cajun Cuisine. She also watches movies at Cape West 14 Ciné, sings with her church’s praise team and travels, her favorite activity. She says she most enjoys visiting Myrtle Beach, S.C.
“It has a beautiful beach, great shopping and lots of fun activities to do. Some future destinations include traveling to Europe after graduation. I have always wanted to visit Rome for the history and the Italian food! And, I also would love to go to the Caribbean, because I love tanning on the beach!” she says.
“Consider doing an internship,” Herwig advises future Southeast students. “It was the experience for me that let me know I headed in the right direction career-wise. It also gave me an opportunity to showcase the skills I had developed.”
