Plainfield Native Laura Goeing Participates in Thodos Dance Intensive

Department of Theatre and Dance

Southeast Missouri State University dance student Laura Goeing of Plainfield, Ill., recently participated in an intensive with Thodos Dance Chicago in which she took ballet, modern, composition and company repertoire classes.

“The time I spent at the Thodos Dance Chicago intensive was very inspiring and a great learning experience,” she says. “I got a small taste of what it would be like working for a dance company and working as a dancer in Chicago. Doing this intensive will help me in the future, because it boosts my résumé, and because I made connections with the company members and other dancers at the intensive.”

For the last two years, Laura has been adding to her dancing experience at the American College Dance Festival in Akron, Ohio, and Springfield, Mo., where she has attended master classes and performed with students from other college dance programs.

“It was a great experience,” she says. “It is a great place to learn a variety of dance styles from a lot of different teachers and make connections with other dancers in the area.”

Laura previously performed in similar intensives with the River North Chicago Dance Company and at Oklahoma City University.

“The benefit of intensives is that you get the opportunity to learn so much, meet new people and have fun all at the same time,” she says.

Laura also credits her time at Southeast with helping her prepare for a successful career.

“The faculty members work so hard to give us everything we need, in and out of the classroom,” she says. “I feel that I now have a sense of the level of professionalism I need to succeed in this business, and I know what steps I need to take to get where I want to go, and that is a comforting feeling.”

After graduating from the University, Laura says she plans to work as a dancer on cruise ships or in a dance company. Afterward, she says she would like to teach dance either in her own studio or on the college level.

“I love dancing, because it allows me to express myself using so much more than words. It’s my passion, and I feel so blessed that I get to do what I love every day,” she says.

Laura says her favorite moments at Southeast were dancing in the “Fall for Dance” showcase her freshman year.

“It was awesome getting to participate in my first college dance performance,” she says.

Currently, Laura is a student forum representative for the Department of Theatre and Dance. In this role, she listens to students discuss their concerns about and ideas for the department and then communicates the information to theatre and dance professors each month.

“It really is an effective way to help both the students and the faculty make the most of what the department can offer,” she says.

Also on campus, Laura is a resident assistant in Towers West.

“I really enjoy getting to know everyone in the residence hall,” she says. “It feels good being able to help others have an amazing experience in college and be successful at Southeast.”

Laura encourages future Southeast students, “Get involved! It’s an amazing opportunity to make friends, boost your résumé and just have fun doing things you enjoy.”
