Southeast Missouri State University accounting student Allyson Litteken of Breese, Ill., is interning with Anders CPAs and Advisors in St. Louis, which serves privately held companies and high-net-worth individuals.

There, Allyson builds one-on-one relationships and networks with other young professionals. Her daily activities include logging tax documentation with ProSystem fx Practice, assembling completed tax returns and using CCH Document. She is also training to prepare trust and individual income tax returns.

“My internship at Anders will give me chances to use my skills and learn new ones around every turn,” the self-described outgoing intern says. “But, most of all, it gives me the chance to thrive in a team-oriented environment that is flexible and rewarding and will contribute to my future success by giving me opportunities to learn and grow as a professional.”

Allyson previously interned with The MITRE Corporation, a not-for-profit organization chartered to work in the public interest, with expertise in systems engineering and information technology. Throughout the internship, Allyson performed office duties, generated monthly financial reports, arranged travel itineraries and acted as the office events coordinator.

Back at Southeast, Allyson is a student employee in the Office of the Dean of the School of University Studies.

“Working on campus has opened up many opportunities for me. I have met faculty, administration and staff members outside the Donald L. Harrison College of Business, which has opened my network of professionals,” she says. “It has also given me practice in time management. I have learned to prioritize my time wisely between going to class and work and getting my coursework completed.”

On campus, Allyson is a member of Beta Alpha Psi and Alpha Delta Pi. Allyson has held several small leadership roles within Alpha Delta Pi, including assisting with social committees and Greek Week and attending the sorority’s international Leadership Seminar in Atlanta last summer.

“Being a member of Alpha Delta Pi has really pushed me to get involved on campus and in the community,” she says. “Our philanthropy, the Ronald McDonald House, holds a special place in my heart.”

Allyson says her favorite moment at Southeast was the overall ‘new’ experience of college she felt upon her arrival.

“Southeast has been an adventure; I have enjoyed meeting new friends, taking risks and trying new things. I am very anxious to see life after college,” she says. “I feel Southeast has taught me to be a more independent person, which in turn has prepared me for the real world.”

After graduation, Allyson says she plans to pursue her CPA (certified public accountant) certification while continuing to build her network.

“What excites me most about my chosen major in accounting is my future as a certified public accountant,” she says. “I look forward to the busy season, taxes and simply doing what I love.”

When she is not working toward her career, Allyson scrapbooks, reads, goes golfing and boating, and travels. She says her favorite destination is Mexico.

“I love warm weather, beaches and sand,” she says. “I would love to travel to Europe in the future. I would love to experience the culture, tour all the amazing sights.”

Allyson encourages future Southeast students, “Enjoy life as it is. Don’t wish every day away; you’re only in college for four years. Have an open mind when it comes to taking opportunities, and strive to give 110 percent in the classroom. Also, get involved on campus and in the community.”
