Michael Simelton is a truly gifted and active person. In spite of the myriad of activities with which he is associated, Michael remains faithful to his priorities as a student.

“...Stay focused and keep your eye on the prize,” he asserts. “Remember that life is what you make it, and never give up. You might fall sometimes, but everyone does. Find a mentor to help guide you. Remember you can always learn something from someone.” These are Michael’s words of advice to people who will be beginning their lives as students at Southeast Missouri State University.

A technical graphics major who plans to graduate in May 2005, Michael will continue his studies in graduate school at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale in fall 2005. Outside the classroom, Michael’s hobbies include motivational speaking, sports, assembling model cars, weight training, working on cars and praising God through dance ministry. Some of his favorite moments at Southeast have been spent at the University Center talking with friends. In addition, he also works at K’s Merchandise in Cape Girardeau.

Michael has had the opportunity to take advantage of many rewarding experiences during his years as a student at Southeast.  He names Dr. Craig Downing as one of the faculty members who positively influenced his experience, adding that he “was a great influence” and that he “learned a lot from him.” In addition, Michael adds, “I have grown so much mentally, spiritually and physically.  I had other opportunities to go to other schools, but this was the best place for me.”
