Southeast Major: |
A Lifetime of Experiences as an Undergraduate Belleville, Ill., native Dan King has had more exciting experiences as a student at Southeast than many have in their entire lives. Dan, a marketing management major, recently returned from a two-and-a-half week study abroad program in Greece and Italy. “Rather than learning about international marketing in a classroom, I experienced it firsthand in Athens, Corinth, Florence, Pisa, Siena and Rome. “Every day on this program was an adventure. Each morning our group visited famous sites such as the Parthenon, the Coliseum, the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel,” adding that, despite having seen pictures of these historic places, “Being there and standing in their shadows is simply breathtaking. Words cannot describe how it is to have interacted with a piece of history. “I learned to think on my feet as I adapted to change in order to capitalize on the task at hand. Through this program, I became culturally enriched and grew as an individual. Some things you just can’t learn from a book—you have to experience them.” Dan currently interns for Sniperdyne Systems, a company that revolutionized business operations in regards to inventory management and vendor and customer relationship management. “There is always something new and challenging for me to do. I’m putting my knowledge gained at Southeast to use, as well as learning new skills, such as utilizing industry software—vital to my success as a marketer and seller.” Dan also enjoys his time in Cape Girardeau. Participating in intramural sports, hanging out with his Sigma Chi brothers and going downtown are his favorite activities. “I’ve been whitewater rafting and bungee jumping, and I hope to add skydiving to the list. “My time at Southeast has helped me to improve time management and also multi-tasking,” says Dan. “With these attributes gained from the University, I have been fortunate to lead my fraternity as president and give back to the community through philanthropic service. “My advice to future Southeast students would be to get involved. Don’t sit back and wait for an opportunity to land in your lap. If you want success, go find it and take it.” |
