International Programs As a Southeast international student, you have the opportunity to take advantage of the following services:
The Expanding Horizons Program is an international speakers bureau connecting requests for international speakers with students who are willing to share information about their countries, cultures and lives. Being a participant in the Expanding Horizons Program allows you to improve your English, make new friends and learn about American life and customs. For more information on the Expanding Horizons Program, visit http://www2.semo.edu/intadmit/expandinghorizons.htm. Southeast requires that you attend an orientation program designed for international students new to Southeast Missouri State University. International student orientation helps you to become more acquainted with Southeast’s campus and the City of Cape Girardeau; provides you with information on academic expectations, academic advising and billing information; and allows you to meet other international students. If you are applying to be a student or scholar from outside the United States, and you are not a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident of the U.S., you will be required to obtain the appropriate visa. For information to help you obtain a visa, visit http://www2.semo.edu/intadmit/arrival.html#Obtainingvisa. For information to help you renew your visa, visit http://www2.semo.edu/intadmit/visaexpired.htm. Work is not expected of you while you are attending Southeast, but if you do need to supplement your income; working on-campus is permitted to both citizens and non-citizens on student visas. This can be done without special permission from the U.S. Immigrations and Naturalization Service (INS). A non-citizen who would like to work off-campus must receive permission or authorization from INS. For more information on working while you are in the United States, visit http://www2.semo.edu/intadmit/workinginusa.htm. Each year, the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program (DV) makes available permanent residence visas to persons meeting the eligibility requirements. Applicants for Diversity Visas are initially chosen through a random computer-generated lottery drawing. Visas are distributed among six geographic regions with a greater number of visas going to regions with lower rates of immigration, and no visas going to countries sending more than 50,000 immigrants to the U.S. in the past five years. For more information on the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, visit http://travel.state.gov/dv2002vb.html. |
