Why Should I Major in Accounting at Southeast?
- In today’s highly competitive market, the demand for accounting graduates continues to grow. Accounting has been identified by the U.S. Department of Labor as an area of rapidly growing job markets into the 21st century.
- Employers of Southeast Missouri State University accounting graduates include among others, Big 5, large regional and local Certified Public Accountant (CPA) firms, the Missouri State Auditor’s Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Missouri Department of Revenue, the State Department of Economic Development, school districts, community colleges and universities, financial institutions, and international firms such as TG(USA), Nordenia USA, Lee-Rowan, Anheuser Busch, Monsanto, Southwestern Bell, Ralston Purina, Boeing, Maritz Inc., A.G. Edwards, Mallinckrodt, Purina Mills and numerous other financial, industrial and not-for-profit organizations.
- The curriculum completed by accounting graduates at Southeast positions them to succeed regionally and nationally. First-time pass rates on the CPA examination have placed Southeast graduates at the top among the Ohio Valley Conference schools and above the national average. Southeast students also have placed nationally in the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) Student Case Competition. In addition, Southeast’s curriculum assists students in preparing for the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) designations.
- Southeast business students receive hands-on training, including business internships with major corporations and industries.
- Matthew Pierce, a 2001 Southeast graduate and an accounting major who finished at the top of his class with a perfect 4.0 grade point average, earned a perfect score on the Major Field Achievement Test in Business. This score placed him in the top one-tenth of one percent of about 65,000 students nationally who took the exam during the past two academic years. “I really enjoyed my experience at Southeast,” Pierce said. “The professors are extremely interested in seeing students learn. They are really committed to their students and make themselves available to you. I just sincerely appreciate having all of the resources I had there.”
- The Department of Accounting and Management Information Systems is housed in the Donald L. Harrison College of Business, one of the finest colleges of business in the Midwest, serving more than one-third of all declared majors in the University.
- The college is accredited by AACSB-International (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), placing it in the top 25 percent of business programs nationally.

- As a Southeast student, you will receive lots of student attention. The student-faculty ratio at Southeast is 17 to 1. The Donald L. Harrison College of Business has nearly 50 full-time faculty; over 90 percent have a doctoral degree. Ninety-eight percent of courses are taught by experienced practitioners with specialized knowledge.
- Courses are scheduled to allow full-time students completion of their undergraduate degree in four years or less.
