Southeast Missouri State University

Why Should I Choose a Minor in the Department of Agriculture at Southeast?

  • Career opportunities in agribusiness and agriculture are numerous.  Approximately 23 million Americans, or one out of every six workers, are currently employed in the agricultural and food system.  Careers in this program are important and rewarding because the products of agriculture–food, fiber, fuel, ornamental plants, flowers, veterinary services, and many other natural goods and services–are either essential to life or make our lives significantly better.
  • Agribusiness and agriculture students at Southeast are provided with outstanding facilities and computer technology, an excellent internship program, and numerous real-world learning opportunities.
  • The Department of Agriculture is committed to providing a variety of hands-on learning opportunities for students majoring in agriculture.  Students may work at the University’s Demonstration Farm, the Horticulture Greenhouse, the Rice-Research Station or with individual faculty members on projects.
  • The Department of Agriculture is working to enhance its programs by building a new greenhouse complex. The new state-of-the-art greenhouse facility is expected to give students experience by being the producer, from planting to sales.  The current greenhouse has about 5,500 square feet.  The new greenhouse, covers 11,000 square feet, and will be completed early in 2004.  It will be located on a 17-acre site behind the University’s new softball fields at Bertling and Sprigg, with access from Bertling.
  • The Department of Agriculture sponsors six clubs.  They are the Agriculture Club, Collegiate Chapter of Farm Bureau, Delta Tau Alpha, Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, Horticulture Club and the Pre-Vet Club.  Each club offers social activities, as well as service and leadership opportunities.  By actively participating in clubs, you will make lifelong friends, as well as establish contacts that will benefit you throughout your career.
  • All faculty in the Department of Agriculture have doctoral degrees and most have significant related experience.
  • As a Southeast student you will receive personal attention.  The student-faculty ratio in our classes at Southeast is 17 to 1.
  • The faculty and staff in the Department of Agriculture are devoted to your success in the program.  This dedication is manifested in the vast amounts of time directed to advising and guiding students, in and out of the classroom.
