Southeast Missouri State University's Provisional Alternative Certification Program assists candidates and school districts in filling teaching positions in the following middle and secondary education areas:

  • Business
  • English
  • Family and Consumer Sciences
  • Foreign Language
  • Industrial Education
  • Mathematics
  • Vocal and Instrumental Music
  • Physical Education
  • Science

  • Unified Science

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has two alternative certification routes, the "Alternative or Innovative" route and the "Temporary  Authorization" (TAC) route which are both described here: http://www.dese.mo.gov/eq/cert/routes-to-certification.htm.

The first requirement for both paths is that you must be hired by a school district to teach in an area in which you have a degree (or at least a degree in a closely related area), and you must have at least a 2.5 GPA.  Once you are hired, the hiring school district will help you to begin the process of applying for alternative certification, either through a university’s approved program or through the TAC program that is run by DESE.
