Professional Certification

Certification of athletic trainers ensures high standards of care in professional practice. The National Athletic Trainers' Association's Board of Certification (NATABOC) endorsement is considered the entry-level credential for the profession and is required by most employers depending upon the state. The following are criteria to be eligible to sit for the certification examination:

  1. Complete a CAATE-accredited athletic training education program in no less than two years.
  2. Demonstrate proficiency in required competency areas as verified by approved clinical instructors.
  3. Receive their baccalaureate degree from the college or university where they completed the program.

In addition to or in place of certification, athletic trainers may have to meet individual state licensing and regulation requirements. To determine if these added requirements apply, athletic trainers must check with the governing body of the state in which they practice.
