Why Should I Major in Economics at Southeast?

  • Economic majors at Southeast enrich their education through college credit internships and all economics majors are required to either serve an internship or participate in an experiential learning project.
  • Economics majors are offered a variety of educational experiences outside of the traditional classroom setting.  The department hosts community seminars on topics such as the savings and loan crisis, regional economic development and the farm problem in the United States.
  • The Department of Economics and Finance is housed in the Donald L. Harrison College of Business, one of the finest colleges of business in the Midwest, serving more than one-third of all declared majors in the University.
  • The college is accredited by AACSB-International (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), placing it in the top 25 percent of business programs nationally.  
  • With prestigious national accreditation and an outstanding faculty with a foundation in contemporary business practice, the Harrison College of Business serves students with high-quality programs and the support systems essential for their success.
  • The Harrison College of Business is housed in Robert A. Dempster Hall, a state-of-the-art facility designed to promote student learning and professional success.  The building contains a rich array of hands-on business and instructional technology, all digitally connected to the world. 
  • As a Southeast student, you will receive lots of student attention.  The student-faculty ratio at Southeast is 17 to 1. The Donald L. Harrison College of Business has nearly 50 full-time faculty; over 90 percent have a doctoral degree.  Ninety-eight percent of courses are taught by experienced practitioners with specialized knowledge.
  • Economics majors may earn a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in economics or a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (B.S.B.A.) degree.  The type of degree chosen varies with the student’s interest and goals.  Many students select economics as their minor.  The Department of Economics and Finance attracts students with a wide variety of major fields including pre-law, criminal justice, English, political science, psychology, sociology, history and secondary education.
  • A degree in economics is excellent preparation for law school.  According to an article in the Nov. 30, 1998, issue of the Wall Street Journal, economics majors average about 155 out of a possible LSAT score of 180, ranking highest in a study of the most common majors for law school applicants in 1992 and 1995.
  • You can join is a chapter of Omicron Delta Epsilon, an economics honor society. 
  • Courses are scheduled to allow full-time students completion of their undergraduate degree in four years or less.
  • The current job placement rate among business majors is currently 99 percent within a year of graduation.  
  • The Harrison College of Business offers a 33-credit hour Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degree program.  Southeast’s B.S.B.A. degree program provides the prerequisites for admission into the M.B.A. program.
