Why Should I Major in Engineering Physics at Southeast?

  • Classes in the Department of Physics and Engineering Physics at Southeast are taught by dedicated faculty with research backgrounds and expertise in such areas as electron atom and magnetic neutron scattering, mathematical physics, nuclear physics, solar radiation and laser spectroscopy.
  • The Engineering Physics program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, which is the sole accrediting body for engineering programs in the United States (see: www.abet.org) This means that graduates of this program are able to enter immediately into graduate programs in physics and engineering. They are also able to take the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam, which is the first step toward becoming a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Missouri. After four years of creditable engineering experience, they are then eligible to take the Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam, which leads to an official license to practice engineering.
  • Majoring in Engineering Physics at Southeast gives you the opportunity to study and work in great facilities, and you’ll work with technology that will play a pivotal role in your future career. The Department boasts a computer lab with 18 networked computers, an electronics laboratory, an advanced physics laboratory containing a large optical table and modern electronic instrumentation for data acquisition and analysis, an observatory located north of Cape Girardeau and extensive research space for undergraduate research and senior design projects.
  • This major offers you great career possibilities. Graduates of Southeast’s engineering physics and physics programs have been employed as engineering physicists, systems analysts, software engineers, and can be found in such places as the Boeing Company, the graduate school of the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and the U.S. Air Force.
  • As an undergraduate in the Engineering Physics Department at Southeast, you will be encouraged to participate in research with faculty members and to present your findings at various local, regional and national forums such as the National Conference for Undergraduate Research, the Missouri Academy of Science and the Southeast Missouri State University Student Research Conference.
