Why Should I Study Hospitality Management at Southeast?

  • The lodging industry is a $133 billion industry, and has grown from 32,000 hotels in 1987 to 49,000 in 2008. The expansion, along with retiring baby boomers, has fueled the need for managers and leaders.
  • The restaurant industry expects sales to reach $558.3 billion in 2008, which marks 17 years of consecutive growth in the industry.
  • In 2008, the nations 945,000 restaurants expect to employ 13.1 million people, making it the second largest private-sector employer.

  •  The industry projects 50 percent growth in hospitality sales by 2010.   
  • As a hospitality management student, you gain experiential learning through the hospitality management internship.  Hospitality management students participate in a 12-credit internship program that allows the student to develop an exposure, understanding and working knowledge of actual operations within the hospitality industry. The work experience assists the students in identifying opportunities for permanent employment upon graduation. 
  • Hospitality Management students gain hands-on experience in our food production laboratory located in Dearmont Hall. You will gain skills through first-hand experience in food selection, food preparation and quantity food production.
  • You can join the Southeast chapter of the Missouri Restaurant Association, which allows you to interact with area restaurant professionals. This provides you with networking and scholarship opportunities. 
  • Southeast’s hospitality management students reap the benefit of learning within a smaller environment with a low faculty-to-student ratio.
