Why Should I Major in Mathematics at Southeast?

  • Classes in the Math Department at Southeast are taught by over twenty-two dedicated faculty and six graduate assistants.
  • Our mathematics faculty represent expertise in areas such as number theory, linear algebra, mathematics education, topology and statistics, to name a few.
  • The Department of Mathematics at Southeast, in addition to preparing students for careers in pure and applied mathematics, also offers strong preparation for math-related careers in business, government and teaching.
  • The salary for individuals who hold jobs which use applied mathematics is high and math-related jobs are available in government, industry or education.
  • Many states, including Missouri, are currently experiencing a shortage of high school mathematics teachers. The demand for these teachers is expected to remain strong in the coming years.
  • In today’s changing and ever more technologically inclined world, people trained in mathematics are highly desired for new developments and advances in scientific, engineering, business and social science disciplines.
