Admission to the Department of Music


Students seeking undergraduate admission to the Department of Music must meet the criteria for acceptance to the University. In addition, all prospective music majors must:

  1. take an applied instrumental or vocal audition in person before the applied area music faculty which consists of

    1. prepared selection(s) of representative repertoire for the applied instrument or voice         
    2. sight-reading 
    3. performance of scales or rudiments appropriate to the instrument or voice

  2. take the following diagnostic and placement examinations
    1. the piano proficiency or piano placement examination                                                   
    2. an aural skills examination

  3. be recommended by a music professional such as a high school band or chorus teacher.

  4. submit a representative example of an original composition (composition majors only)

Students who are deficient in any of the aforementioned areas will be granted provisional admittance to the Department of Music and must enroll in 100 level applied music, music theory, aural skills, functional piano and a major ensemble. Students who are admitted provisionally may reapply for regular admission to the Department of Music after the successful completion of the first semester and the resolution of any deficiencies.

Note:  All music majors who have received regular or provisional admittance to programs of study in the Department of Music must have a Declaration of Major form on file in the Music Office. Forms are available from the department secretary and must be signed by the student and the Chair of the Department of Music .
