Real World Experience Music students at Southeast have access to many opportunities for experiential learning. Music education students will sharpen their real-world skills through student teaching opportunities in area elementary and secondary schools. Students also gain first-hand performance experience in recitals, small chamber groups and the many larger ensembles which the department sponsors. In addition to our many chamber groups, students have the opportunity to take part in large ensembles. These ensembles include:
Music education students are also eligible to teach in the Southeast Missouri Music Academy. This institution is sponsored by the University and seeks to expose elementary through high school students in the area to the joys of making and experiencing music. The academy offers private lessons in voice, piano, strings, percussion and woodwind and brass instruments. Children may also receive Suzuki string training. In addition, academy students are trained in music theory and aural skills. Teaching in the Music Academy gives our music education students the added experiential learning they need to become successful music teachers and the Academy also helps to form a lasting and valuable relationship between the University and the community. |
