Why Should I Major in Physics at Southeast?

  • Classes in the Department of Physics and Engineering Physics at Southeast are taught by dedicated faculty with research backgrounds and expertise in such areas as electron atom scattering, magnetic and bio materials research, mathematical physics, nuclear physics, solar radiation, astronomy, and microwave and laser spectroscopy.

  • In addition to receiving a solid background in your physics courses of physical and mathematical principles, you will be allowed to choose technical elective courses in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering physics, environmental science, geoscience, mathematics and remote sensing. This will give you a versatile bachelor of science degree that will allow you to look for a job or a course of graduate study in a number of disciplines related to physics and engineering.

  • Students who major in physics make excellent candidates for medical or law school.

  • Graduates of Southeast’s physics program have been employed as engineering physicists, systems analysts, software engineers, and can be found in such places as the Boeing Company, the graduate school of the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and the U.S. Air Force.

  • As an undergraduate in the Physics program at Southeast, you will be required to participate in research with faculty members and to present your findings at various local, regional, and national forums such as the National Conference for Undergraduate Research, the Missouri Academy of Science and the Southeast Missouri State University Student Research Conference.
