Why Should I Major in Spanish at Southeast?

  • Southeast’s Department of Foreign Languages and Anthropology has been declared one of the nation’s 35 model programs by the Modern Language Association (MLA).

  • Twelve credits of Spanish courses will allow you to study abroad at the Universidad de Salamanca, the Universidad Antonio de Nelvija in Madrid and many others in order to gain a better understanding of Spanish language and culture.

  • Spanish courses at Southeast are taught by dedicated faculty who have studied at such institutions as the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Nicaragua.

  • Southeast offers many opportunities for you to engage in experiential learning. This means you will be able to combine the lessons taught in your lectures with real-world experience in speaking and/or teaching Spanish. Numerous internships, both paid and unpaid, are available and students majoring in Spanish Education are placed in area classrooms beginning their freshman year.

  • There is a great demand for public and private school teachers certified in one or more foreign languages. As the number of schools offering foreign language instruction continues to increase, the job prospects in the education field will continue to be bright.

  • Many companies with trading partners in foreign countries are seeking employees with backgrounds in foreign language. The Harrison College of Business offers a degree program in international business that is well-suited for foreign language majors.

  • Your Spanish skills can be used in government agencies such as the State Department, the Immigration and Naturalization Service, Customs Service, Intelligence Services, the FBI, DEA and the International Aid Services. Many of these institutions are recruiting college graduates with foreign language skills.

  • Global corporations are increasingly turning to foreign language majors to help them open new markets and expand and improve existing ones.
