Southeast’s sport management program gives you the opportunity to gain real-world experience by participating in two internships. The first is a sport management practicum, where you will spend an average of eight hours per week for 12 weeks in a sport organization. Your responsibilities will vary depending on your prior preparation and experience. Many students gain this experience working in Southeast’s NCAA Division I athletic department. You may work with the marketing department and a specific athletic team, in the sports information office, with Athletic Compliance or in event and facility management. These experiences will help you make decisions about the area of sport management you want to pursue.

As a sport management major, you will also complete a full-time internship of 480 hours for 12 academic credits. This full-time work experience may be within Missouri or out-of-state.  Sport management internships provide you with opportunities to apply theory and concepts from your courses in a practical manner, and help you learn standards of professionalism in the workplace. The internships will also give you the chance to network with professionals in the sport industry. Students are often able to use the experience and contacts they gain during their internships to obtain an entry-level position to begin their career.
