The Department of Music at Southeast Missouri State University is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. NASM, founded in 1924, is an organization of schools, conservatories, colleges and universities. It has approximately 600 accredited institutional members. It establishes national standards for undergraduate and graduate degrees and other credentials.
Overview:

Our talented faculty offer instruction in all areas of musical study, including music education, performance, composition, electronic composition and world music. This outstanding group of educators has performed both nationally and abroad, with recognition in Canada, China, Czech Republic, England, Ireland, Japan, Scotland and the Ukraine. We have numerous performances of university ensembles, faculty and student recitals, and guest recitals at the River Campus. Department of Music
Requirements:
Students seeking undergraduate admission to the Department of Music must meet the criteria for acceptance to the University. In addition, all prospective music majors must:
- Perform an applied instrumental or vocal audition in person before the applied area music faculty which consists of
- Prepared selection(s) of representative repertoire for the applied instrument or voice. See our Music Auditions page for more specific information.
- Sight-reading at the appropriate difficulty level.
- Performance of scales or rudiments appropriate to the instrument or voice.
- Fill out our online Music Scholarship Application at least two weeks prior to your audition if requesting financial assistance.
- Take the following diagnostic and placement examinations
- Piano proficiency or piano placement examination
- Aural skills examination
- Complete two Scholarship Recommendation Letters by music professionals such as a high school band or chorus teacher as well as your high school principal or private instructor.
- Submit a representative example of an original composition (composition majors only)
