Music Education - Vocal
Southeast’s education program is fully accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). This national accreditation and Southeast’s strong program requirements and reputation offer our graduates enhanced opportunities when searching for and obtaining employment nationwide.
Enrolling in the music education program provides specialization in either the vocal or instrumental areas and includes coursework from the College of Education. Completion of this degree track grants the student certification to teach in the state of Missouri.
Southeast’s education program differs from that of many other universities by providing you with extensive field experience, beginning with first-hand classroom training and observation during your freshman year and continuing through student teaching (link) during your senior year.
As a student in Southeast’s education program, you will receive a full semester of on-the-job student teaching experience, as opposed to the traditional eight or nine weeks of training, thus better preparing you for a career in education.
Southeast’s education program’s unique block format, in addition to providing increased professional experience, allows you to meet other students with your major early on, thus enabling you to form common bonds and establish professional relationships with others in your field.
Requirements for Admission to the Teacher Education Program:
· 2.5 GPA
· ACT Score of 22 or 265 on all C-BASE sections and any ACT score
§ The ACT score requirement can be waived with a four-year degree
§ A score of 20 is acceptable if test was taken before Oct. 1, 1989
· Score of 235 on all sections of the C-BASE (College Basic Skills Academic Skills Exam - tests science, social studies, English, math and writing. Sections not passed must be passed within two years of the semester in which the student first passed any section.) The C-BASE requirement is waived for students who have previously earned a four-year degree.
· Complete EN100 (English Composition) with a grade of “C” or better
· Complete EN 140 (Rhetoric & Critical Thinking) with a grade of “C” or better
· Complete PY120/CF120 (Child Psychology) with a grade of “C” or better
· Complete Block I (EL120 – Intro to Teaching) with a written recommendation
· No felony convictions are permitted
· Student may not be on disciplinary probation at the University
